starfallz: (spin)

that special day of the year

So, I was chatting with a friend about spinning and confessed "I've never actually knit anything with my handspun". She then says to the effect, "You could knit anything, even just a swatch..."

Grabbed the nostepinne and my little targhee sample skein, wound it up and started knitting away.

Hey, look at that. It looks kind of like yarn.

Hm... it really looks like yarn.
Targhee Swatch

This is dangerous. This could just tip me over the edge, buying fleeces, spinning up pounds of yarn, knitting myself sweaters. It is a dangerous dangerous thing.

Yet, I can't think of a better way to celebrate Valentine's Day. Thank you to all my crazy friends and family who love me enough for this.

You're not alone, it was forever and a day before I finally knit with my own handspun. It's a big deal for a lot of us, almost like it's sacred, or there's some sort of mental block. Your is gorgeous, just beautiful. I'm so glad you got into spinning. :) Keep up the good work!

Oh, and now contrast that with some of your first stuff and you'll really blow your mind. I am appalled at some of my earliest work, but I try to be kind to myself, when you made my website I was literally spinning for a few months on my craptastic Ashford.

Heh, yea, the first skein I did on my wheel is really kind of embarassing. It had all kinds of problems. :) I've kind of been thinking of each spinning project as a practice in a different technique. Some have been successful, some not. I'm still trying to figure out how to give things enough twist to hold together or enough to be a good plied yarn. I think I will be continually learning.

A lot of my stuff is spun with no end purpose, so I haven't touched it to see how it actually knits. I can't think of what would be propert to knit it into and yea, I want to store it away in a little box because I was learning with each skein. And now I'm thinking I should just pull stuff out and start knitting it, just to see what it does. I kind of like that change in feeling.

The swatch looks lovely and cushy. And I'm looking forward to what the Romney singles do.
