melusine

With great joy, I can announce my first published pattern!

Melusine - Detail
Melusine, published in The AntiCraft.

I got the idea for this back in 2007 and worked on it through most of 2008, from knitting to dyeing to wrestling it into a shape to be published. I'm glad it is finished and out there for others to see.

Melusine - Knitted
Finished shawl, before dyeing.

Melusine - Dyed
Finished painting of the dyes.

Melusine - Final
Finished shawl.

That's a really beautiful pattern!

I'm exceedingly impressed by where its name was derived, because "looks like dragon scale" was the first thing that popped into my mind.

Wow!!! I love the stories about Melusine, and to see your interpretation of it is just so woderful! I am incredibly impressed, not only by the knitting, but by the dye work as well! Congratulations on your (very well-deserved) publication! :D :D :D

[identity profile] starfallz.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much. :) I was wondering how many others knew of Melusine. I have ideas for paintings based off of her story as well.

[identity profile] swandog.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW!!! O_o Love it!! :D <3 The colors and scale pattern are simply amazing, and the name totally fits! :D You should make another one of the same pattern in pheasant, peacock or other feather colors! :)

[identity profile] starfallz.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have thought of doing another shawl that uses a more feather like pattern, but it would be interesting to see this dyed up in different ways to evoke different creatures!

[identity profile] robiewankenobie.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I knit like you when I grow up?

[identity profile] starfallz.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno... Why would you want to grow up?

[identity profile] vsoul.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations! It's gorgeous!!!
*hugs*

[identity profile] starsongky.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa. I never would have thought of dyeing a shawl after it was knit. I could totally see this in a Phoenix version, dyed in reds & oranges & yellows.

[identity profile] starfallz.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm looking forward to seeing what others turn out!

I highly approve of the name. This is a stunning pattern! The little ridges you managed in the middle of the scales, omg. Beautiful!

Keeled scales, baby! Thank you. :)

Um, Hi! I have followed you from Anti-craft to Ravlery to here to say that this is stunning, imaginative, amazing, gorgeous and wonderful beyond my ability to express in language. I *love* the way you painted the scales, esp. the brighter ones nearest the top. Brilliant eye for detail and the shading really makes the colors pop!

I'm a beginning knitter (just having learned simple cabling and hoping to graduate to "non-rectangle" soon) but this is on my list!

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful - congrats for the publishing but most of all - THANK YOU for publishing!

[identity profile] starfallz.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy my pattern. :) I hope it won't be too intimidating for you in the future. If you feel up to trying a bit of lace, you could even do a small size of it with some solidish sock yarn (just follow the chart without repeating the center section) and it will make a little kerchief.
