Thanks to a wonderful gift from my mother, my father and I attended the Suzanne Vega performance at the Kentucky this past Tuesday.

She's touring for her new album, Beauty & Crime, and it was really wonderful to see her again. I've seen her twice before, the first time probably about 9 years ago on the same stage. A delight to listen to and always interesting to hear some of the stories behind her songs.

And being the dorkfan I am, I noted down the songs:

Tom's Diner
Marlene on the Wall
New York is a Woman*
Ludlow Street *
Caramel
Frank & Ava*
Gypsy
I'll Never Be Your Maggie May
Left of Center
Blood Makes Noise
Angel's Doorway*
Pornographer's Dream*
Bound*
Liverpool
Luka
Tom's Diner (remix style)

Encore:
Zephyr & I*
Queen and the Soldier
Rosemary

*new album

I so wanted to go to that show! Alas, the husband had to work.

That is sad. I hope you get to see her next time she comes by!

I haven't listened to her in years. Does she still have that subtle flavor of a French Café?

LOL, oddly enough, Caramel was my favorite of hers. That's the sound that could get me to buy another album.

Hm, the new album has some of the sensuality of Caramel, but not as much. Her two most recent don't seem to be as strong in sound or building images as Nine Objects of Desire or 99.9 F.

how is the new album? i never really got into songs in red and grey.

It is more like Songs in Red and Grey, but not as heavy. The album is mostly about New York City in different ways. I find it lacking in the poetic descriptions though, a little two bare faced and the phrases repetitive. There are a few songs I find myself humming (Ludlow Street and Pornographer's Dream). I'm hoping she'll some day return to the more descriptive lyrics and that she's just working through some of her personal dramas.

Oh. I'm so jealous. How is the new album?

And did she wink at you again? :)

Hehe, I was hoping she would, but alas, she didn't. I mean nothing to her! :D

The new album is ok. It is kind of like the previous album, she's working through her real life dramas (divorce, remarrage, death of her brother) and is about New York in many ways. I find myself humming some of the songs, so there are some good ones in there. It's not an overwhelming recommend though.

Hmmm. I'll see if I can check out a few songs before I commit.

Amazon has samples of the songs so you can hear snippets of them all if that helps. :)
